Love for Love consists of a massive entanglement of marriages and engagements in which individuals and families seek honor and wealth. Valentine, who has squandered his wealth before the play opens, provides a counterpoint, being motivated instead by passion.

Sir Sampson and Mr. Foresight are cast as being far too interested in the arranged marriage of Ben and Prue as a way of combining their families' wealth. Mr. Foresight's inability to deal with the possibility of his wife being unfaithful to him further darkens the image of marriage in the play.

Mistress Frail shows interest in Ben strictly because of the possibility of Ben inheriting all of his father's estate. Once it becomes clear this will not happen, she loses all interest. Through all of this, the play suggests that true love is rare and most relationships are about greed, status, or simple lust.
