In her short story “Scarlet Stockings,” Louisa May Alcott relates the developing relationship between Belle, a strong-minded girl, and Harry, whom she initially denigrates as frivolous. The author traces the relationship between two young people as they move from friendship, through a budding romantic interest, into deeply committed love and engagement. Alcott shows that love changes when people are placed in challenging circumstances—in this case, those created by the Civil War. Both Belle and Harry have to grow up fast. They must quickly become more mature, but in different ways. Because of their genders, their participation in the war effort is substantially different.
Belle wants Harry to serve in the military because of her patriotic belief in restoring the Union but also because she wants him to prove himself. She had not really anticipated that he might be seriously wounded or killed. Although Harry’s trickery shows that he has remained his mischievous self, he does become a more serious person. When Belle thinks he was injured and pleads with him to desert, she shows that she cares more about him than the worthy cause. This about-face makes him realize that she truly loves him.
Although the story takes place during one particular war more than 150 years ago, its message remains timely. Armed conflicts, including civil wars, are a constant feature of political disputes worldwide. Every day, couples are forced to make and change plans in regard to the demands of military service.
