For a writer with a full-time professional career, Louis Auchincloss proved astoundingly prolific, producing nearly one book of fiction or nonfiction each year from the 1950’s through the 1990’s. Like that of many highly prolific writers, the quality of his work is decidedly uneven. At his best, however, Auchincloss meets and surpasses the standard set by John P. Marquand and John O’Hara for twentieth century American social satire, displaying a resonant erudition that somehow eluded the two older writers even in their brightest moments.
