In chapter 3, the conflict that arises deals with the issue of building shelters on the beach. Ralph and Simon struggle to construct the last two remaining huts after Jack and his hunters quickly leave the site. Jack couldn't care less about building the huts and is solely focused on killing a pig. He also gives his hunters permission to stop working on the huts and allows them to play in the pool and relax while Ralph and Simon continue to work hard. Ralph resents Jack and his hunters and attempts to convince Jack that the huts are necessary for their survival. However, Jack completely disagrees and responds by telling Ralph that the boys want meat. The tension builds as Jack continues to argue with Ralph, who is becoming more and more frustrated with Jack. This chapter emphasizes the difference between Ralph and Jack's beliefs, opinions, and interests. Ralph is focused on establishing an organized, secure, civil society while Jack is focused on hunting and satisfying his primitive desires. Jack and his hunters contribute to the conflict by refusing to complete their assigned task and openly defying their elected leader, Ralph.
The underlying conflict between Ralph and Jack is based on Ralph's desire to work towards being rescued. He wants to build shelters, maintain a signal fire, and do everything they can to take care of the littluns and then get rescued.
Jack wants to hunt and have fun and satisfy the desires of the group for meat and for a way to combat their fear.
In chapter three, this comes to a head because Jack has been off hunting and neglecting what Ralph sees as his duties. Not only was he gone the whole time, he also hasn't been successful in the hunt. Jack has also allowed the other boys with him to neglect the rules and their duties in terms of maintaining the fire and helping to build the shelters, etc. So in this way, thanks to Jack's leadership, the choir is exacerbating the conflict by following Jack and ignoring Ralph's "rules."
