- Why do the boys choose Ralph to be “chief”? How does he immediately share power with Jack? What are some of Ralph’s character traits that suggest he would be a good leader?
- In what ways is the island beautiful and life-sustaining? What makes the boys’ circumstances challenging? What will they have to do in order to survive?
- Describe Piggy’s bitter complaints about how he is being treated. Why do you suppose no one listens to Piggy or treats him with respect? Do you think the other boys should listen to and respect Piggy? Why or why not?
- Stranded on the uninhabited island, the boys have formed a small society of their own. Describe how it mirrors society in the outside world. How do the boys’ personalities and behaviors reflect those found in society at large? What do you anticipate will happen as they continue to live together?
- Jack seems to be preoccupied with hunting. What are some details that support the idea that he has become obsessed with killing a pig? Do you think Jack is motivated solely by the boys’ need for meat? What else might be driving him to hunt and kill?
