Saroo Brierley is an Indian-born Australian man who gained international attention when he attempted to reconnect with his family from which he had become separated at age five. He had been adopted by Australian parents after being found on a railway. His arrival there was due to a series of events that began with his father leaving his family.

When Saroo was very young, his father abandoned his mother, leaving her and her children in severe poverty. To attempt to provide for her family and lift herself out of her home life, Saroo's mother worked in construction. However, it often did not provide enough money to feed her family, and the children would often beg at the train stations for extra money, leading to the separation.
