Homer's ancient Greek epicThe dysseyis The Architypal "travel" story. Odysseus travels, unwillingly, from the island Ithaka where he is King to Troy, where the Greek forces attack the city. After the ten years it takes the GFreeks to conquer Troy, Odysseus and his men set sail for home. The sea god Poseidon causes them all sorts of problems and eventually, after twenty years, Odysseus arrives home and is reunited with his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus. A modern reworking of this epic is James Joyce's novelUlysses, which recounts in great detail the wanderings of Leopold Bloom during an ordinary day in Dublin in 1904. Kerouac'sOn the Road is another and so is Salinger'sCatcher in the Rye.
