To a large degree, what sort of fiction a given person enjoys reading is a matter of personal taste. In general, most readers tend to prefer one specific genre or type of novel over others.

Something first pointed out by Hery Mansel in his astute analysis of the sensation novel was that the plot driven novel, filled with incident and suspense, was most likely to be extremely popular, especially among unsophisticated readers. More recently,m Janice Radway, in her book on Reading the Romance, has argued for specific patterns of wish fulfillment as another driving force among a certain group of high volume readers of fiction.

Typical genres of popular fiction with large followings include horror (such as vampire novels), romance, mysteries, westerns, science fiction, and thrillers.
