Compose a one- to two-page memoir recounting a memorable incident from your childhood. Aim to capture the perspective of a child, and write in your unique voice and style rather than attempting to mimic Karr.

Investigate the topic of alcoholism and its impact on families, especially children. Why do some individuals develop alcoholism while others who drink do not? Is there a cure for alcoholism?

The Karr family had to evacuate due to Hurricane Carla in 1961 in Texas. Utilize the Internet to research Hurricane Carla and other significant hurricanes along the Gulf Coast. What weather conditions produce a hurricane? How has hurricane path prediction technology evolved since the 1960s? (Note that in The Liars' Club, the storm unexpectedly hits a town in Louisiana instead of Leechfield, Texas, its predicted path.)

Karr describes a dysfunctional family as "any family with more than one person in it." She suggests that every family has some level of dysfunction. Do you agree? Why or why not? How would you define dysfunctional? Do you believe that people can move past negative childhood experiences, or do such experiences leave a lasting impact?
