Community policing is generally seen as a solution to less serious crimes like drug crimes, burglaries, and gang-related crimes.  Community policing cannot, of course, eradicate or completely prevent crime.  However, it can help to reduce those types of crimes in ways that are less possible for traditional, reactive policing.

One example of a solution provided by community policing is a neighborhood watch program.  Neighborhood watch programs allow the police to collaborate with community groups in an attempt to reduce crime.  They allow the police to, for example, teach community members how to spot suspicious activity and they encourage residents to contact police when such activity is spotted.  By providing such opportunities for police and communities to work together, community policing can help provide solutions to crimes like the ones mentioned above.
