August Wilson's King Hedley II is part of his 'Pittsburgh Cycle' of plays and takes place in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the year 1985. The characters in this play were already established in an earlier play Seven Guitars. The eponymous King Hedley is a young African-American man and the 'spiritual son' of King Hedley from Seven Guitars. King's mother, Ruby, is a blues singer. King Hedley is in his mid-thirties, as is his girlfriend Tonya. Elmore is a conman in his early sixties and he has been in love with King Hedley's mother Ruby for almost three decades. Another character who was also present in Seven Guitars is a harmonica player in his mid-sixties who goes by the name of Stool Pigeon. The final character worth mentioning is Mister, who is a close friend of King Hedley's.
