What Do I Read Next?
Invisible Man, the sole novel published by Ellison, is widely regarded as a classic of twentieth-century literature. Released in 1952 and inspired by Ellison's own experiences, the novel follows a young African American man's quest for self-identity.
James Baldwin's short story "Sonny's Blues" (1957) explores the lives of two African-American brothers in New York City. One brother, a high school teacher, has adapted to life within white society. The other, a jazz musician struggling with heroin addiction, expresses his struggles and "blues" through his music.
Richard Wright's Native Son, published in 1940, presents a much more intense and bleak narrative compared to "Sonny's Blues" or Invisible Man. The novel depicts Bigger Thomas, a young black man who resorts to violence due to the suffocating oppression of white society.
