1. Violet has trouble sleeping once the birds are set free. Little things she had to do for them at night like covering their cages, helped her settle down to sleep.

2. Joe sits around and thinks about Dorcas day and night. He tries to remember everything beginning with the time he first met her. This way her memory won’t fade and he can keep their love alive.

3. Remembering Dorcas and the intensity of his feelings for her will help him stay young. When he can’t remember exactly how he felt at the time, he will be old.

4. African-Americans came North to find work opportunities. Another important reason was their search for rights and dignity. The South was strictly segregated and regarded them as second-class citizens.

5. Joe thinks about having an affair because Violet rarely talks at all these days. She only thinks and cares about her birds.

6. Dorcas wants Joe to take her to the club Mexico. She is tired of sneaking around and hates that their relationship has to be secret.

7. Although Malvonne cleans the offices of some very important people, she does not care about the pictures on their desks and the information she can find out about in their garbage cans. Malvonne is more concerned about her friends and neighbors in Harlem.

8. Malvonne discovers that her nephew has been stealing people’s mail. He opens the letters looking for money. Malvonne reads the letters and feels bad that they will never get where they are supposed to go. She tries to intervene when she can.

9. Joe and Violet met when Joe fell out of the walnut tree he had been sleeping in.

10. Although the country has birds, streams, and beauty at every turn, the city also has a beauty to offer. In fact the city, a sculpture of stone on stone, can be more beautiful. The city sky at night, for example, can find no country rival.
