Spring has brought forth one of the most stunning days of the year, and Harlem reacts accordingly to the pleasant weather. From the sidewalks to the rooftops, the melodious tunes reverberate, intensifying the widespread excitement of the season. Additionally, the atmosphere within the Trace household has experienced a subtle enhancement. Joe's tears have become less frequent and quieter, while Violet appears to have regained control over her mental stability.

On this lovely day, Felice drops by to see Joe and Violet. She is unable to locate the opal ring she had lent to Dorcas and wonders if it might be with Joe. As they gather in the apartment, Felice shares some details about her life, mentioning that her parents, who are now retired, used to work as domestic helpers in Tuxedo, New York for a significant part of their lives. She laments the limited time she had with them, even calculating an estimated number of days they actually spent together as a family.

Felice discusses her personal connection and close bond with Dorcas, emphasizing that she knows her better than anyone else. As best friends, they shared a deep understanding. For a long time, Felice has been eager to tell Joe not to cry over Dorcas, as she believes Dorcas didn't deserve his tears.

Since the couple appears quite kind, Felice willingly alleviates their distress. "Dorcas chose to die!" Felice declares. She clarifies to Joe that Dorcas only sustained a shoulder injury when she was shot. Dorcas declined medical assistance and hospitalization, insisting on sleeping instead. Consequently, she passed away from avoidable blood loss.

Felice seizes the chance to inquire why Violet disrupted Dorcas' funeral. Violet offers a difficult-to-grasp explanation, but Felice appears to comprehend it nonetheless. Similarly, Joe acknowledges his role in Dorcas' demise, yet experiences some relief. To reciprocate, Joe shares insights about Dorcas with Felice, shedding light on aspects that may help Felice see the positive side of Dorcas.
