The story comes full circle, concluding as it started—with a dialogue. The subject matter revolves around suffering; both the narrator's own agony and the distress experienced by others. At this point, the narrator engages in introspection, confessing that their sole purpose in existence is to witness the lives of other individuals.

The narrator is experiencing emotional distress and disappointment because of their incorrect perception of Joe and Violet's connection. They sense that they overlooked a vital detail, causing them to make an incorrect prediction about the pair's outcome. The speaker made false assumptions about Joe, Violet, and the impact of Felice's arrival on their relationship, thinking that past patterns would reoccur with Dorcas.

The storyteller recognizes the error's origin. For instance, Joe's incessant tears were not solely for Dorcas. It now becomes evident that his weeping might have been for Violet, his mother, or due to making one too many life changes.

As the story concludes, we receive final information about the characters. Alice Manfred returns to her native place, while Felice stays committed to her decision. Joe secures new employment and rekindles his relationship with Violet. They enjoy malted drinks, converse, and look after Violet's latest pet bird, also named Violet. The narrative closes with the narrator expressing a desire to have known such affection.
