Act 3 Summary
Willis continues to work at moving up the ranks in Black and White. Eventually, he is elevated from generic Asian male to special guest star, helping Turner and Green solve the case of Dead Asian Male.
A shocking plot twist occurs when the case suddenly becomes connected to the disappearance of Older Brother. Willis’s father is also a suspect, playing the part of Old Asian Man and working in the kitchen of the Golden Palace. Willis’s character maneuvers ahead to warn his father that the police have questions without disclosing their relationship to the detectives.
When Willis shifts back to his feigned broken English in front of his father, his father looks disappointed. Willis was born and raised in the United States and speaks perfect English, but he is forced to act like a foreigner for the sake of fitting into the roles available for Asian men on Black and White.
Turner and Green are suspicious that Willis was speaking to his father before they arrived. Willis explains that he was informing the old man about Older Brother's disappearance and asking for his aid. He then informs Turner and Green that the old man used to be a kung fu master. Willis tauntingly tells Turner that the old man could probably even teach him a few things, angering him.
While trying to calm Turner down, Green refers to Willis as “the Asian Guy,” which causes him to indignantly ask if that is all he is to them. Breaking character, Turner and Green tell Willis that choosing to take the part of Generic Asian Man is only playing into the system. Rather than moving up or breaking down barriers for other Asian actors, Willis is instead reinforcing stereotypes. Turner emphasizes that even his own role as a Black male detective is a category, not an actual identity.
Turner and Willis continue to argue, with Turner telling Willis that if he doesn’t like the system, he should “go back to China.” They almost come to blows, but Green intervenes. Turner remarks that it is nice to have “White on your side.” In the end, it is always white people who get to act like the bigger person and break up fights between racial minorities.
The actors then shift back to the scene, asking Willis’s father about Older Brother. He tells them that he last saw Older Brother months ago when Older Brother tried to give him money. The detectives are immediately suspicious and ask Willis where the money comes from in Chinatown.
Willis takes the detectives to an illegal gambling den, where all of the extras and additional parts are played by his friends from the SRO. The boss of the den is played by Young Fong, the son of the elderly man who passed away in the shower.
The detectives verbally spar with Young Fong, who calls a beautiful young woman up to the office, temporarity distracting Willis. However, he is brought back into the scene when Turner and Green indicate that he is a part of their team. The three of them then question Young Fong about Older Brother’s possible motives and the money he has come into. Young Fong responds that Older Brother doesn’t care about money but that he did have a plan. The detectives offer Young Fong a deal in exchange for more information, but Young Fong refuses. He gives a signal, and suddenly the gambling den erupts into violence. During the chaos, Young Fong escapes, and Willis saves Turner from being attacked by a henchman.
As the team assesses the damage and realizes that...

Young Fong got away, the beautiful woman who was brought in by Young Fong is revealed to be an undercover detective named Karen Lee. She compliments Willis on his kung fu and his bravery in saving Turner, implying that he could eventually become Kung Fu Guy. She then tells him to let her do the talking, and Willis nods along, struck by her beauty.
Lee and the detectives banter, and she gently chides them for disrupting her case and letting Young Fong get away. However, she has a lead on where the money was coming from, indicating that Young Fong was selling counterfeit luxury handbags. She then implies that Willis knows more about the operation, securing a part for him in the ongoing storyline of Black and White.
However, Willis’s joy at this prospect is cut short when he realizes that he has been shot and is currently bleeding out. Turner tells him that he has brought honor to his family and Lee apologizes, saying that this is just how short-term roles for Asian men go. He can return to the show as another guest star once the plot takes them back to Chinatown.
