Harriet Jacobs used the alias "Linda Brent" in her narrative Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.  She also used fictional names for all the characters in the book to safeguard the identities of those in the book and make the reading a bit more accessible to the audience.  Jacobs's purpose in the narrative is to detail the difficult landscape that slaves, particularly female slaves, had to traverse.  Jacobs describes the many advances that her master took to her in an effort to seduce her and make her his mistress.  Jacobs also describes the lives of slave women on holidays and near the time when trading took place.  She recalls the many families that were broken during this time of false joy.
