Sisterhood, sibling rivalry, and family ties prove to be the most significant themes throughout the novel. Maggie and Rose are polar opposites as far as their personalities are concerned but, nevertheless, they are jealous of one another. Rose wishes for just a fraction of the male attention given to Maggie who envies the stability of Rose's life as well as her intellect. Despite their differences and their past conflicts, Rose and Maggie ultimately realize that together, they can overcome anything that comes their way.
