Themes: Freedom
Jack and Algernon both grapple with escaping the constraints of Victorian society. Jack manages this by leading a double life, where he is known as Jack in the countryside and as Earnest in the city. Algernon, on the other hand, creates a fictional character named Bunbury, who perpetually demands his care. This parallel in their behavior hints at their actual relationship as brothers. Additionally, their attraction to similar women, Gwendolen and Cecily, further suggests this duality.
