Marguerite is approaching graduation day, which, as one can imagine, is a very special day in her household. As she says, there's a long-standing tradition among African Americans to give presents to children who are moving from one school grade to another. Giving gifts for graduation, which is even more of a big deal, is an extension of this tradition.

When it comes to giving graduation gifts, Marguerite's family is particularly generous. Uncle Willie and Momma have ordered her a Mickey Mouse watch like the one owned by Bailey. As for Bailey himself, on the morning of his sister's graduation, he gives Marguerite a box wrapped in Christmas paper. It feels very much like a box of chocolates, but when Marguerite opens it up, she's delighted to discover a leather-bound copy of a collection of poems by Edgar Allan Poe, which is a wonderful gift for such an avid reader as Marguerite.

Louise gives Marguerite four embroidered handkerchiefs, and Mrs. Sneed, the minister's wife, gives her an underskirt that she had made. Marguerite will wear it to her graduation. Visitors to the store are also very kind, giving Marguerite nickels as well as encouraging her with the instruction to keep on moving to higher ground.
