Sally tells Esperanza that her father never hits her hard. At school, she tells people that she fell, but no one believes her. Once, she went to stay with Esperanza’s family, but her father came to fetch her when it was dark. He had been crying and said this was the last time, but as soon as he caught her talking to a boy, he beat her again.
