The three old aunts came to Lucy and Rachel’s house when their baby sister died. Esperanza meets them when she goes to the house to view the body. The old women tell her that she is special and has an auspicious name. They ask her to make a wish and promptly say that it will come true. They do not ask what the wish was, but one of them tells her that she must always remember to come back to Mango Street after she has left, as it will always be part of her. Esperanza feels ashamed of having made such a selfish wish.
