Sire Summary
There are four skinny trees, planted by the city, outside the house on Mango Street. Esperanza feels that she understands them and that they understand her. They are ragged and pointed, but they have a secret strength, grabbing the ground angrily and refusing to die. She looks at them when she feels too sad and small to survive, since they continue to grow whatever happens.
