Esperanza tells Sally that she lied. What the boy did to her was not the way Sally described it, and she did not want it to happen. She was waiting for Sally at the carnival, by the red clowns, but Sally went away with a boy. While Esperanza was waiting for her, a boy came up and grabbed her arm. He said “I love you, Spanish girl” and forced himself on her. His mouth tasted sour, and his fingernails against her skin were dirty. All the magazines and books lied about sex, and Sally lied as well.
