Esperanza meets Lucy and Rachel, two sisters who ask her for $5 so that they can buy a bike for $15. Cathy tells her not to talk to them, but Esperanza wants to make new friends, so she gives them $3 she has saved and $2 of Nenny’s. The three girls buy the bike and agree to take turns riding it. Today, however, the three of them all want the bike at the same time, so they ride it together along Mango Street.
