Marin spends most of her time inside the house, looking after her young cousins, though she also sells for Avon and wears a lot of their makeup. She has a boyfriend in Puerto Rico and plans to marry him when she returns. Before this, however, she wants to get a job downtown, but Louie’s parents are planning to send her back to Puerto Rico next year in any case. Esperanza is sorry about this, because she likes Marin, who is older and more worldly than she is and who teaches her about boys and how to beautify herself.
