Louie and his family live in the basement apartment underneath Meme’s house. Louie’s cousin Marin lives with them, as her mother and father are in Puerto Rico. Louie has another cousin, who once visited in a yellow Cadillac, in which he allowed Esperanza and her friends to take a ride. When they heard sirens, Louie’s cousin told all the children to get out of the car and tried to escape from the police who were pursuing him. However, he drove the Cadillac into a lamppost and was taken away in handcuffs.
