Esperanza is in the kitchen at the home of Elenita the witch woman. There are holy candles and a plaster saint on top of the refrigerator and a picture of the voodoo hand on the wall. Elenita tells Esperanza to look into a mug of hot water and tell her if she can see a face, but she cannot. Elenita then takes up a pack of cards with strange symbols on them and uses them to tell Esperanza’s fortune. She will go to a wedding soon, and will have “a home in the heart,” though it is not clear what this means. Elenita sees that Esperanza is disappointed that she spent $5 to learn so little, and tells her to come back on a Thursday, when the stars will be stronger.
