A reader can find the answer to this question in the early parts of chapter 8. The chapter begins by telling readers that Roy was sticking to his promise to stop searching for Beatrice Leep's stepbrother. Mentally, this is a hard promise to keep because he really wants to search; however, the weather and his bike are not cooperating. It has been raining for three straight days, and his bike tire is beyond repair.
Thursday rolls around, and Roy's mother picks him up after school; she announces to Roy that she has "good news." The good news is that Roy's suspension from the bus has been cancelled:
Your suspension from the school bus has been lifted!
Roy is definitely not happy about that, and he is suspicious of how and why it happened. Roy finds out that his mother pestered Miss Hennepin with multiple phone calls arguing about the fairness of Roy's suspension while nothing happened to the other kid. Roy's mother informs Roy that he can start riding the bus as early as Friday morning.
Roy reiterates to readers that he isn't excited about the situation, and he even suspects that his mom's motive for bugging the vice-principal wasn't exactly altruistic. Roy believes that his mother wants to resume her morning yoga sessions, and she can't do those if she has to drive Roy to school:
He suspected she had another motive for pestering the vice-principal-she was eager to resume her early morning yoga sessions at the community college, which she couldn't attend as long as she was driving Roy to Trace Middle.
