Character deaths in The Hobbit
Summary:
Several notable characters die in The Hobbit. Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the dwarves, perishes in the Battle of the Five Armies. His nephews, Fili and Kili, also die in the same battle while defending Thorin. Additionally, the dragon Smaug is killed by Bard the Bowman when he attacks Lake-town.
In The Hobbit, which character dies in the Battle of the Five Armies?
Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the band of dwarves hoping to regain the treasure under the mountain, is killed in the Battle of the Five Armies. He doesn't die during the battle, but succumbs to his wounds shortly after the battle. Fili and Kili were also killed during the battle. Bilbo, wearing the ring making him invisible, had been knocked unconscious during the battle so he didn't find out how the battle ended until it was all over. Before Thorin dies, he calls Bilbo to his side so that he can ask for Bilbo's forgiveness. Thorin realizes that greed had taken over his better judgment and that Bilbo was right all along - simple pleasures are better than hoards of gold.
Who dies in The Hobbit?
While it can be assumed that several unnamed characters die in the climactic
Battle of Five Armies, only two of the primary characters of The
Hobbit are deceased by the end of the book. The first is the main
antagonist, the dragon Smaug. While Bilbo is attempting to secure treasure from
Smaug, he spots a weak point in the dragon's armor and relays the information
to Bard the bowman, who slays the dragon with his favored "black arrow."
The second and more tragic death in the book is that of Thorin Oakenshield, the
leader of Durin's Folk and the dwarf most determined to take the treasure of
the Lonely Mountain back from the dragon Smaug. After furiously banishing Bilbo
for using the Arkenstone, a precious family heirloom of Thorin's, as a
bargaining chip, he is mortally wounded in the Battle of Five Armies. Though
his death is imminent, he does reconcile with Bilbo in the end.
Thorin, the king of the dwarves, dies in The Hobbit as a result of his injuries in The Battle of Five Armies.
Thorin was the king of the dwarves, and the leader of the company that included the dwarves and Biblo.
When the dwarves, Thorin, and Bibo are saved by the eagles, Thorin is gravely injured. Bilbo and Thorin have had their differences, especially regarding the Arkenstone, but Thorin forgives Biblo, honoring his bravery in the battle.
“… Since I leave now all gold and silver, and go where it is of little worth, I wish to part in friendship from you, and I would take back my words and deeds at the Gate." (ch 18)
Bilbo “he wept until his eyes were red and his voice was hoarse” at the loss of Thorin. Although he did not want to go on the adventure in the first place, he had come to respect the dwarf king.
