Yajirobei

Yajirobei, affectionately known as Yaji, was born into a prosperous merchant family. However, his life took a turn for the worse due to his indulgent lifestyle, leaving him in diminished financial circumstances. Consequently, he roams across Japan, entangling himself in a series of amusing and lively escapades. Yajirobei is more quick-witted than virtuous, embodying the classic traits of a picaresque traveler. His character represents a novel and popular addition to Japanese literary tradition, as previous travel narratives rarely featured such a robust and realistic traveler.

Hana-no-suke

Hana-no-suke, who later adopts the name Kitahachi, or Kita for short, is an actor by profession. He is characterized by his exuberant nature and sharp intellect. As Yaji’s travel companion, Kita shares in the excitement and unpredictability of their joint adventures. His presence adds depth to the narrative, and his lively personality complements Yaji's quick wit, making them a formidable duo as they navigate through their various exploits.
