Baseball was being played in Canada at about the same time the sport appeared in the United States. An early game was documented as having been played in Beachville, Ontario in 1838. Several Canadian teams of the 1870s were considered on a par with American teams, and the London Tecumsehs won the International Association pennant in 1877. The Japanese were a major influence on Canadian baseball, and their best team, the Vancouver Asahis (the "Rising Suns," founded in 1914) barnstormed in Japan in 1921. Japan's Tokyo Giants returned the favor when they played the Asahis in 1935, and the Asahis won Canada's top honor when they championed the Terminal City League in 1926. Canada had its own official minor league--the Cape Breton Colliery League--from 1937-1939. Another minor league, the Provincial League, based in Quebec, survived from 1935 into the 1960s.
