The Great Plains of Texas lie to the east of the Rocky Mountains and extend into the northwestern region of the state. They are sometimes called the High Plains and, in Spanish, the Llano Estacado.
Though the Great Plains are predominantly flat in character, the area is still home to many natural landmarks, including the Palo Duro Canyon, which is the second largest in the country and sits close to the city of Amarillo. You can also find the Llano and Toyah Basins in the Great Plains area, as well as several major rivers, including the Colorado River, which flows downward towards Mexico, and the San Antonio River, which flows through this city and is fed by a number of natural springs.
