Yes, the independence movement in India was successful. Europeans, most prominently the Dutch and British, had first colonized India after Vasca da Gama made the first European voyage to India in 1498. Despite resistance from the indigenous Indians--including several armed rebellions in the 18th and 19th centuries--the British maintained control well into the twentieth century.
Following the Revolt of 1857, Indian nationalists began to unify against the British Raj (the name for the British government in India). During the early twentieth century, Mahatma Gandhi organized civil disobedience (peaceful protest) movements in India. However, it was not until the end of World War II that the independence movement would prove successful.
Great Britain was deeply hurt by both world wars, specifically World War II. Thus, they spent the postwar years attempting to rebuild Britain itself; they had few resources to devote to their colonial holdings. Consequently, they began to grant independence to their imperial colonies. On August 15, 1947, India formally received its independence from Great Britain.
