What are the accomplishments of the First Philippine Republic?

Although the First Philippine Republic was very short lived, it did succeed in overthrowing the Spanish, at least briefly.  It was established with a constitution (The Malolos Constitution), so the revolution was fairly democratic.  Unfortunately, the Spanish-American war ended and the Americans to it upon themselves to return the Philippines to Spain.
