George Washington, the first president of the United States, is viewed by some people as a hero for many reasons. He played an important role during the American Revolution, when the British colonies in America decided to break from Great Britain. He had military experience under Great Britain, which taught him how to lead people in war and how to be an excellent strategist. He became a member of the House of Burgesses and was very active in politics, which gave him experience that was useful during his Presidency and formed his opinions of the state of affairs in the colonies. He opposed taxation without representation, and believed that the American colonies should be their own country. He was an important military figure, as General during the American Revolution, leading the Americans in a successful rebellion against British forces. He is well known for his leadership during battles such as the Battle of Trenton, which was a turning point in the war. He is also a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and the first Presidential leader of the United States. He was an intelligent man and an influential leader. George Washington also set a precedence of the United States having a president instead of being ruled by a king, which is one of the reasons people view him as a hero who upheld democracy and supported the rights of the people.
