In "The Stowaway," woodworms are hiding on Noah's Ark. The story of the ark is told through the point of view of one of the woodworms aboard the ship.

In "The Visitors," Franklin Hughes is the main character. He is a tour guide and an historian on a cruise ship that gets hijacked. Other characters aboard the ship include his girlfriend Tricia.

In "The Survivor," the main character is Kath, a woman who steals a boat and sails away with two cats believing that she is escaping a nuclear event. When she arrives on an island, she starts imagining she is in a mental institution.

In "Three Simple Stories: Voyage of the Damned," one of the characters is Lawrence Beesley, a survivor from the Titanic.

In "Upstream" a man named Charlie write letters to his wife Pippa.

Since there are so many stories in the novel each story has different main characters. The author is even a narrator of one of the stories.
