Student Question

What is your favorite part of the play, Henry V?

Quick answer:

Favorite parts of Henry V include early scenes with Pistol and his crew, which humorously reveal the disparity between King Henry's idealized image and the reality of common people's lives. The St. Crispin's Day speech is noted for its manipulative undertones, showcasing Henry's Machiavellian traits. The play's influence is highlighted by its frequent imitations, such as in the movie Independence Day. Another memorable moment is when Warwick returns the "Paris balls" to the French king.

I have to admit that I find the St. Crispin day speech rather cynical and manipulating, which is of course one possible reading of the play, as Henry becomes more and more Machiavellian and learns how to be the perfect king. My favourite scenes are some of the early ones with Pistol and crew, which undercut the kind of unity and image that Henry wants to create and show the reality of the lives of the people that Kings like Henry used. And these scenes are very funny too!

I love that scene too. Have you noticed how many times it has been imitated? My favorite imitation is in the movie Independence Day, just before the big battle. You almost expect the drunk guy to run up to the president and beg to lead the vanguard.

I have too many favorite scenes! I love when Warwick returns the "Paris balls" to the king of France. I just love the whole play!
