The Russian leaves because he believes that the manager and the others hold ill-will towards him and may hurt or even kill him with Kurtz dead. Marlow agrees with this, so the Russian prepares to leave to a military post 300 miles away. The Russian asks Marlow for his old shoes, English tobacco, and cartridges before leaving.
