In chapter 13, Brian experiences misfortune when a plane flying overhead does not spot him and continues flying away. Brian feels defeated at this moment and attempts to commit suicide by cutting himself with his hatchet. Once Brian wakes up, he realizes that he is still alive and becomes determined to never let death in again. Brian transforms into a new, tough individual, who is resolute and strong-minded. Brian quickly discovers how to shoot and kill fish using his makeshift bow and arrows. After enjoying his first "feast day," Brian is filled with a new hope. The hope Brian experiences stems from his knowledge and resolute perspective. Brian is no longer hoping to be rescued but has hope that he will be able to survive in the wilderness on his own. Brian's "tough hope" gives him the motivation to adapt and survive in the wilderness.
