Chapter 35 Summary
Beyond the Veil
The evil, “drawling voice” demanding the glass sphere from Harry was from none other than Lucius Malfoy. He demands the glass sphere, which contains a prophesy, again, and the friends notice that their way out is blocked by a large ring of Voldemort’s supporters: the Death Eaters.
Harry demands to know where Sirius is and Bellatrix Lestrange, a Death Eater, mocks Harry. Sirius is not at the Ministry of Magic at all; the dream was to lure Harry here to get this prophesy.
Harry threatens to destroy the prophesy if any of his friends are hurt. When a few of the Death Eaters try to use spells to get the prophesy, Lucius Malfoy stops them because of the risk of the sphere breaking.
Because the Death Eaters desperately want the prophesy in the glass sphere for Voldemort, Harry can think of nothing else to do but to keep talking to them. He asks why Voldemort wants this prophesy and Bellatrix Lestrange is surprised and disgusted that a “half-breed” like Harry would even speak Voldemort’s name.
Harry reminds Bellatrix that Voldemort himself is a “half-breed” with a Muggle father; she gets so angry that she begins a spell, but Lucius Malfoy deflects it. The deflected spell hits a few of the shelves, and some other glass spheres begin to shatter. Out of the spheres come ghostly figures that begin to speak the prophesies involved.
Harry continues to ask the Death Eaters why the prophesy is so important. As the Death Eaters continue talking and mocking Harry, Harry gives the signal and all of his friends cast spells against the shelves in the room holding all of the glass spheres. As the shelves fall and the sphere’s shatter, the group tries to run for the exit.
All of the friends do a good job disarming and jinxing the Death Eaters. In fact, when Hermione disarms one, he falls into a strange jar that shrinks his head to the size and temperament of a baby. Eventually the Death Eater named Dolohov uses a spell that makes Hermione fall to the ground, unconscious. Harry responds with a spell that makes him as stiff as a board.
Neville, who now has a broken nose, picks up Hermione and the group goes on. When Ron appears, he has a strange liquid seeping out of his mouth and is giggling uncontrollably. Ron uses his wand and magically calls the white brains in the green liquid. The brains immediately begin wrapping tightly around Ron.
In an effort to help Ron, Harry lifts the prophesy high and runs out of the room. In the process, he falls down into room with the archway and veil into a circle of Death Eaters.
Neville Longbottom appears and Bellatrix taunts him with the memory of her killing his parents. Just as Bellatrix is about to continue the Cruciatis Curse on Neville, the Order of the Phoenix members swarm into the room.
The Death Eaters and the members of the Order fight, casting spells against each other. Just as Harry Potter stuns the Death Eater named Dolohov, Sirius yells at Harry and Neville to run for it. In the process, Harry drops the prophesy. Neville saves it the first time, but when a spell hits close to Neville and Harry, the prophesy drops in the confusion, breaks, and reveals itself with no one listening.
Suddenly, Dumbledore appears. Only Bellatrix Lestrange and Sirius Black are still exchanging spells. Sirius taunts Bellatrix to do better. Unfortunately, her last spell hits Sirius directly on his chest and he falls backwards through the archway and disappears into the veil. Harry panics and tries to save Sirius, but Remus Lupin grabs Harry to prevent him. Sirius is dead.
