Student Question

What happened to the dark ship in Haroun and the Sea of Stories?

Quick answer:

The dark ship in "Haroun and the Sea of Stories" is destroyed when Haroun uses Wishwater to spin the axis of Kahani, bringing sunlight back. This causes the ship, which thrives in darkness, to deteriorate and melt into ordinary shadows. Haroun's action follows his successful reattachment of Butt's brain, enabling him to execute his plan to defeat the ship by exposing it to sunlight.

After jumping into the water with Butt's brain it occurs to Haroun that shining sunlight onto the dark ship will destroy it.  Haroun finds the plug in the water and finds Butt near it.  After three attempts he is able to reattach Butt's brain.  Once he has done this he drinks the Wishwater that was given to him and concentrates on wishing "that the axis of Kahani would spin normally" to bring back the sunlight.  It took a few minutes, but his wish comes true and "the entire land is bathed in sunlight" and the ship starts to deteriorate and melt back into ordinary shadows.
