Why did the women in "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World" name the drowned man Esteban?

A good question. While we can't know the author's intentions for sure, I would argue that the women name the man Esteban because of the meaning of the name.  "Esteban" or "Steven" comes from the Greek for "crown." They are naming him as a king or royalty because of his appearance.
