What is the central message of Hamlet?

The best way to sum up the message of Hamlet is first to rephrase it, and to ask, "What does this play focus on?" This is because there isn't a straightforward lesson like you might find in a fable or parable.

If we shift the question that way, we see that the play is about an existential dilemma. It focuses on how hard it is to be human and to be pulled between conflicting choices. Is the ghost real or not? If real, is it good or not? Should Hamlet kill Claudius or not? And of course, should Hamlet continue living or not?
