Guy Vanderhaeghe was born in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, about 150 kilometers from the city of Regina. He received his B.A. (1971) and M.A. (1975), both in history, from the University of Saskatchewan; he also received a B.Ed. from the University of Regina in 1978. He worked in various academic jobs as well as doing occasional writing, editing, and archival work until the publication of his first story collection, Man Descending. During the mid-1980’s, he was a writer-in-residence at the Saskatchewan Public Library. Despite holding a part-time teaching job in the national capital of Ottawa, Vanderhaeghe for the most part continued to reside, teach, and write in his native Saskatchewan.
