In chapter 3, Jonas's father brings home a new child named Gabriel from the Nurturing Center in hopes of increasing the infant's chances of attaining its developmental goals and avoiding release. Jonas's sister, Lily, immediately draws attention to Gabriel's pale eyes, which are unusual like Jonas's eyes. Almost every citizen in the community has dark eyes and cannot see in color. Jonas is initially startled by the appearance of Gabriel's pale eyes and feels like they add depth to the infant's character. Later on, Jonas discovers that he has the Capacity to See Beyond, which is essentially the gift to see in color and explains the function of his pale eyes. In Jonas's community, which is founded on Sameness, the ability to see in color and to hear music is very rare. Jonas's Capacity to See Beyond is one of the requirements necessary to become the community's next Receiver of Memory.

Jonas's most unusual feature is his unusual eyes,  they are pale, while everyone else’s are brown, and he has the ability to see things change in a way that he cannot explain.

If by the new child you mean Gabriel, then I would say that Gabriel is pale-eyed. Although Jonas is also pale-eyed, this is a rarity in the Community. There is a suggestion that the two of them may have shared the same birth-mother.

What was unusual about Jonas and the newchild?

Both Jonas and the new child Gabriel have light colored eyes. They majority of the community has dark colored eyes. It is considered rude by the community to draw attention to such differences.

What was unusual about Jonas and the newchild?

Both Jonas and the newchild had very pale eyes, when most of the community had dark eyes. This matters at first because they seem strange or even odd (a bit disturbing). Later, it seems that the pale eyes are associated with the special sort of vision that Jonas has that allows him his special calling.
