Student Question
Is there a sequel to The Giver?
Quick answer:
There is a part 2 to The Giver, which is the first in a four-book series about a dystopian world. The three other books tell different characters' stories. The second book in the series is Gathering Blue. After Gathering Blue is Messenger. The last book is Son, which is a prequel to The Giver that details the story of Gabriel’s Birth-mother and describes Jonas rescuing Gabriel from being released.
There is a second book that follows the story of The Giver called Gathering Blue. Jonas is mentioned, but the story does not center around him as the story in The Giver does. The protagonist in Gathering Blue is a young girl named Kira. Readers who expect that the book will pick up where The Giver leaves off, with Jonas and baby Gabriel approaching a town outside of the dystopian community of their birth, might be disappointed by this.
Not only is Gathering Blue a second book after The Giver, but The Giver is actually the first in a four-book series about the dystopian world described in The Giver. Author Lois Lowry published The Giver in 1993. Gathering Blue followed seven years later, in 2000. After Gathering Blue, the next book in the series is Messenger, which was published in 2004, and the last entry is Son, which came out in 2012.
In constructing the final book in the series, Lowry might have been responding, in part, to feedback she received from readers who were disappointed that Jonas's story did not continue and who wanted to learn more about what happens to his character. Although the story does not revolve around him as it does in The Giver, Jonas reappears in Son. In fact, Son serves as a prequel to The Giver, telling the story of baby Gabriel’s Birth-mother and how Jonas takes Gabriel away to protect him from being released, or killed, by the community.
