This carefully constructed fragment actually leaves us with many questions that we could conceivably ask. These concern the identity of Geraldo, why Marin was out so late and the exact nature of the relationship between Marin and Geraldo bearing in mind that Geraldo had to conceal his identity.

Yet these unanswered questions only serve to reinforce the central theme of this vignette, which is focussed on the plight of migrant workers and the way in which they had to, by necessity, deliberately obscure their identity to prevent their discovery and explusion from the country. The end of this vignette suggests that what is unknown about Geraldo goes along with his working conditions and what he suffered as an illegal migrant, "just another brazer who didn't speak English." Thus it is that his true identity remains unknown, just as his living conditions, the "sleeping rooms he rented" and his working conditions remain unknown: an ignored part of American society.
