Ravi came from a large family and he had several brothers and sisters including his elder brother Raghu, elder sister Mira and his younger brother Manu. They also lived together with their cousins in what seemed to be a large house.

He wondered if it would not be better to be captured by Raghu and be returned to the milling crowd as long as he could be in the sun, the light, the free spaces of the garden, and the familiarity of his brothers, sisters, and cousins.

Ravi’s mother was the homemaker and she stayed home to look after the kids while the father was away at work. She was also protective of the children as seen when she restrained them from playing outside in the hot sun.

It was still too hot to play outdoors. They had had their tea, they had been washed and had their hair brushed, and after the long day of confinement in the house that was not cool but at least a protection from the sun, the children strained to get out. Their faces were red and bloated with the effort, but their mother would not open the door,

The family was also affluent given the number of its members and the size of the home. This is further confirmed by the number of workers that were stationed at the house. There was a gardener who tended to the compound and a driver who chauffeured Ravi’s father to and from work.

Helped the driver wash the car when their father returned from work. Helped the gardener water the beds till he roared at them and swore he would complain to their parents.
