Nick's earnings and personal cost in Frindle
Summary:
In Frindle, Nick earns a considerable amount of money from the trademark of his invented word, "frindle." He becomes wealthy through the royalties. However, the personal cost includes dealing with the overwhelming attention and pressure from the media and public, which challenges his privacy and normal life.
How much money did Nick earn in Frindle?
Nick started making money when Bud Lawrence chose to manufacture ballpoint pens with "frindle" imprinted on them. Bud and Nick's dad agreed that Nick should receive 30% of profits from the pens and any other frindle branded product. The first check Nick received (which was for the initial three week sales of ballpoint frindle pens) was for $2,250. Nick's dad secretly put the money into a college fund for him. After that, Nick continued to receive 30% of profits from frindle products, which were sold all over the world. In chapter thirteen, "Ripples," we learn that the checks Nick received in his trust fund got "bigger and bigger." By the end of the book, Nick was so incredibly wealthy "that he couldn't even begin to imagine how rich he really was." Nick was generous with his money. He sent his parents on a big trip and set up a college fund for his niece. He also gave Mrs. Granger a beautiful fountain "frindle."
What price did Nick pay for being a hero in Frindle?
After his made-up word "frindle" because an international phenomenon, Nick becomes a celebrity and in many people's eyes a hero. He appears on chat shows such as The Late Show and Good Morning America and enjoys huge popularity at school. He seems to have everything a young boy could want, until he becomes old news and everyone loses interest.
Nick is deflated. Just as he was enjoying himself, everything stopped and he is back to being a nobody. Worse, no one seems to really recognize he was ever famous at all. From being one of the school's most extroverted students, he becomes an introvert. He still has some interesting ideas; for example, he considers persuading the school cafeteria to serve better food, but he can't bring himself to voice his plan. He's no longer sure if he has the strength go through what he went through with his "frindle" idea.
However, in the long term, this proves no bad thing. Nick becomes a more thoughtful rounded person. With the help of his one time nemesis, Mrs. Granger, he eventually puts his cafeteria plan into action, but makes it more about the students than about himself. When he finally receives his trust fund for the selling of the "frindle" merchandise, he is mature enough to use the money to help other people.
In Frindle, how much money did Nick donate for the scholarship fund?
At the end of Frindle by Andrew Clements, Nick is a 21-year-old young man in his second year of college. He becomes very wealthy as he becomes eligible to access the money in the “frindle” trust fund that his parents set up when he was in fifth grade. Nick offers money to his parents and brother who at first reject his offer but then they are convinced to accept his gifts. Mrs. Granger, fifth grade teacher, sends him a package that holds a dictionary that includes the word “frindle” in it. He sends an anonymous letter to Mrs. Granger in which he informs her that he endowed one million dollars to establish a scholarship at the Lincoln Elementary School in her name. In the note, he includes a writing instrument that he encourages her to call whatever she wishes.
